Mail-service Pharmacy
95 percent of employers offer access to mail-service pharmacies that dispense maintenance medications used to treat chronic conditions.

Only 11.1 percent of employers require maintenance medications be dispensed by a mail-service pharmacy, a circumstance commonly referred to as "mandatory mail". Employers with mandatory mail have 27.3 percent of all prescriptions dispensed by mail, a level more than twice that (12.0 percent) seen by employers with voluntary mail.

Just 26.8 percent of employers use retail pharmacies to dispense 60-or-more-days supplies of medication. The dispensing of maintenance medications by retail pharmacies is relatively new and subsequent surveys will track this.

Nearly 60 percent of employers using retail pharmacies to dispense maintenance supplies are not restricting that responsibility to select pharmacies.
