PBMI To Offer Audioconferences

PBMI is introducing a series of audioconferences on drug benefit topics. The purpose of this new PBMI service is to provide interactive educational forums for benefits professionals, pharmacy directors, consultants, and industry analysts.

“Looking Clearly at PBM Pricing Transparency” will be the topic for the first audioconference will be held from 2 pm to 3:30 pm Eastern Time on Thursday, September 23, 2004. The featured speaker will be Tim Watson, PharmD, MBA, president of the Pharmaceutical Strategies Group.

All too frequently, aggressively marketed transparent PBM pricing isn’t clear at all. This audioconference will explore the wide range of market definitions for transparency and what they really mean for the sponsors of drug benefit programs. The key takeaways for participants will be:
• Expectations about how transparency may raise costs,
• Estimations for the type of savings that come with transparency, and
• Strategies for comparing the costs of “transparent” PBM pricing to traditional pricing.

Watson also will provide a case study example of a payer that has changed from traditional pricing to transparent PBM pricing. Implementation challenges and the pros and cons of both pricing models will be discussed.

As president of the Pharmaceutical Strategies Group, Watson focuses on assisting payers in maximizing the value of pharmaceuticals in their population. The firm provides strategic planning, market research, financial analyses, and vendor contract negotiation and management.

Before forming the Pharmaceutical Strategies Group, Watson was a manager in the health care consulting practice of Deloitte & Touche, and has held management positions at several leading PBMs. He has published extensively, including authoring the best-selling book “PBM Formulary Strategies & Their Impact on Payers”, published by AIS Health.
